Blogtacular 2015

Yesterday I attended Blogtactular at The Royal Institute of Great Britain! My blog is only six months old so forking out to go to a blogging conference so early in my blogging career might seem like madness, but I’m not one to be swayed by conformity.

‘Blogtacular is a place for bloggers whose hearts beat with creativity to come together to meet, share and inspire.’

I’m not going to lie, I was petrified. No really. Going to an event where I knew literally two people (vaguely) to converse in a subject of which I’m a lot of a novice was absolutely terrifying, but I have strong a passion for blogging and I had high hopes that Blogtacular would help me get started on the right track.
The keynote opening speaker was Grace Bonney, founder of Design*Sponge and author of the best-selling book, Design*Sponge at Home. She was totally inspirational, I was fascinated by her advice on dealing with change and will definitely be putting some actions into practice.
Before lunch I listened to Monica Stott of thetravelhack.com talk about her life as a travel blogger, yes I was mega envious of her life, her career and her ability to look like she has never experienced a sleepless night even though she has just had a baby. I am hoping her top tips might have helped me in my two minute holiday pitch to Thomson holidays, I was so nervous my lips stuck to my teeth!

After trying to swallow two sandwiches at lunch with all the nervous adrenalin pumping around I headed off back to the Faraday Theatre to listen to the Grow You Audience Panel. This was my favourite of all the lectures. The panel included:

Cate Sevilla is the Managing Editor at BuzzFeed UK.
Sam Baker is Co-founder & CEO of newly-launched site The Pool.
Elizabeth Muhmood Kane is the founder of international wedding blog Bridal Musings.
Kristabel Plummer is a Londoner and writes the fabulous blog I Want You To Know.

The panelists were from diverse areas of the web and their backgrounds and experiences were all quite different. It was so interesting to hear how things got started for them and how their online presence has steered their careers. This section was also stacked with tips and advice on how to grow your blog and the best way to make use of apps and social media.
After the panel I bumped into Viktorija from Andsmile Studio we have met a couple of times before so went to the photo booth together to get some daft pictures taken (see a better version on my instagram).
We went to the UrbanJungle Bloggers lecture together which was about growing a community, I really appreciate what these guys are doing, I wasn’t too sure how I could relate their advice to my blog at the moment but I did buy some plants today and will hashtag them. You should too
#urbanjunglebloggers
The closing keynote was Graphic Designer Anthony Peters from Studio IMEUS. Anthony is the creator and co-director of Made You Look, a documentary about creativity in the digital age. By trade, I’m a Graphic Designer too and I found it refreshing to hear someone else in the same field talk about the importance of print and books. I have never been excited about learning code and designing just for screen but it’s something designers have felt pressure to do over the last decade, I am far more at home with a pot of paint and a squeegee.

Before we left we were handed the most amazing goodie bag I have EVER had in my life!!!! It was chock packed full of books, magazines, cards, sweets and stickers. It even had the Mollie Makes Woodland Friends book in it (my little one has already folded the corners of the projects she wants to make, grrr I hate folded corners, but she is six years old and it was free, how angry can I be).

I made a little trug for my make up with the amazing biscuit lady Nikki McWilliams and painted a cactus (which I’m actually pretty proud of) with the super painterly talent Viktorija from Andsmile Studio.

It was a long old day with so much to absorb, I came home on the train and thought I would just collapse into bed but my head was still spinning with information and ideas when I finally flaked out at 3am!
Oh and before I go I must mention Claire Wilson from Claireabellemakes, I designed Claire’s original blog for her many moons ago. When I told her I was planning to go to Blogtacular and didn’t know anyone she offered to meet me beforehand and basically she looked out for me for most of the day, (although it was easier for me to look out for Claire as she had a big flower crown on her head) I was so pleased to have her there – Thanks Claire you’re a star (a flowery one) x
